Flights are one of the most expensive parts of a trip, so it is important to get the best deal you can. Say, if you're traveling to Vietnam, you may very well spend a couple thousand dollars on the flight and a very small amount on the actual trip. In order to keep things balanced, consider some of the following tips.
Flexibility
Because flight prices fluctuate daily, a day can mean saving hundreds of dollars. Keep your options open about when you want to fly. It is always best to fly in the middle of the week because this is the time fewer people are traveling.Flights are often less expensive right after a holiday.
Secondary Airports
Rather than using mainstream airports, look for smaller, lesser used airports. Most major cities have them. Budget airlines often fly into these secondary airports, and while you won't find all of the luxuries of a regular airline, you will find something that you much more: savings.
Alternate Routes
Consider traveling indirect routes to your final destination. For example, rather than flying directly to Venice, it may be less expensive to take a plane to Barcelona and then fly to Venice. Direct flights are more expensive than indirect flights. If you're interested in doing research, you may want to check on flights from different airlines, as this may yield even better deals. But keep in mind, this may require a lot of time in research.
Airlines Rewards Programs
This is a good way to get free flights, upgrades, companion tickets, etc. This works best if you are a frequent flier. If you're not a frequent flier, it may take you a long time to build up points.
Student Discounts
A student ID can get you discounts on plane and train tickets, as well as discounts at hostels and various excursions. STA Travel is an excellent source of information on student and even teacher travel discounts.
